Motivation
The 3rd Workshop on Iron at the Air-Sea Interface will gather atmospheric and oceanic experts to address main challenges and develop solutions to advance our understanding of the biogeochemistry of iron and other trace elements at the air-sea interface. A key objective will be to identify processes occurring in natural ecosystems that can help test atmosphere-ocean coupling in models. This workshop is co-hosted by the SCOR working group 167 RUSTED (Reducing Uncertainties in in Soluble aerosol Trace Element Deposition).
Goals and Expected Outcomes
This workshop will drive progress in several key areas:
- Identify major challenges and key research needs for better representing the biogeochemical role of iron and other trace element at the air-sea interface
- Foster new research partnerships to maximize expertise/ resources
- Develop a peer-reviewed paper synthesizing participant insights and recommendations
- Creation of an online platform for access to atmospheric trace element data to enhance global data analysis and model development
- Organize a 2025 AGU Fall Meeting special session to share findings with the broader scientific community
Together, these efforts will push the field forward and help train the next wave of Earth system scientists.
Past Iron at the Air-sea Interaction Workshops
The 1st Workshop on Iron at the Air-Sea Interface was held in Telluride, CO, from July 30 to August 3, 2018, with support from NSF and DOE. The workshop drew international participants and produced a perspective paper offering specific guidelines for future laboratory studies, field measurements, and modeling research (Meskhidze et al., 2019). The report aimed to assist both scientists working on iron biogeochemistry and program managers at relevant funding agencies. The workshop identified critical but poorly understood connections between atmospheric/marine carbon and iron bioavailability in the ocean.
The 2nd Workshop on Iron at the Air-Sea Interface was held both online and in Asheville, NC, from July 27-31, 2020, with DOE support. This workshop focused on examining these knowledge gaps and exploring new opportunities to use remotely sensed data to gather information at the atmosphere-ocean interface. The workshop findings were published in the SOLAS assessment report (Workshop on Iron at the Air-Sea Interface, 2021). This report reflected the consensus of diverse researchers from oceanographic and atmospheric science communities, including experts in laboratory and in-situ measurements, modeling, and remote sensing.
